Traditional Daiza for Cut Stones : This gallery shows a sampling of Mas' suiseki with the style of daiza traditionally taught in Northern California. This has a two-level rim, with the inner wall slightly higher than the outer wall; The legs are broad and flat, with relatively little flair; and the daiza wall slopes slightly outward.

The two-line rim gives it a slightly decorative, formal feeling, which harmonizes well with a quiet, elegant stone such as a classic "distant mountain".

Contemporary Daiza for Cut Stones : I use the term "contemporary" for a new, simpler style that many daiza makers have adopted in recent years. This style differs from the "traditional" in that it has only a single rim. It seems to work well for more informal stones, ones that share some the simplicity. I find that it can also work with some stones that have strong color or surface pattern.

Mas is no longer using this style very much - he now prefers either the traditional or the new "creative" style.

Creative Daiza for Cut Stones : The creative daiza are a variation on the standard daiza forms. For these, the rim is not horizontal but instead varies with the contours and movement of the stone, as is commonly done in making daiza for natural stones.

Using this style can allow you to cut the stone lower, thus keeping important features, while "filling in" places where the stone is undercut, too vertical, etc. Thus, stones that might not be good suiseki at all when using the normal suiseki style (with horizontal rim), might become so using this style.
