jtroth > 1. A rock shop we visited had a bin of these stones. This side has beautiful color, and Mas originally planned to make it the front.

jtroth > 7. Beginning of rough model for the planned suiseki, made in 2007. Mas uses polystyrene and plaster to make a model before he carves the final wood base.

To harmonize with the wood, he decided to turn the stone around and use the original back side, which has a more subdued color, as the front. Here he is trying different settings to find the right balance. He was paying particular attention to the relationship between the surface features of the stone and the knothole and other features of the wood.
