I found this stone many years ago in the Eel River. Like any good suiseki it has layers of memories and feelings associated with it. It visually reminds me of Crater Lake, so always evokes memories of my first visit there on a road trip with my mother. But also, whenever I see the stone I am reminded of the day I found it and the friends I was with.

Felix Rivera, Bob and Polly Gould, and I had climbed down a high, steep bank and crossed the river to a small gravel bar. Just as we were leaving, Polly and I simultaneously spotted this stone sitting on ground, upright, just as you see it. Of course we each insisted that the other had really reached for it first so should take stone. In the end, Polly prevailed and I took the stone home.

Many years later Mas joined my life. When he first spotted the stone sitting on the bonsai bench in the garden he assumed that it was a modified stone from Japan. He was amazed when I explained where it was from and immediately started to the base!
We left Roseburg about 6:30 am for the drive to Crater Lake. Early morning on the river was clear and beautiful. Every so often we saw a fisherman in the river, with the trout jumping.
