Mas uses polystyrene and plaster to make a model before he carves the final wood base.
jtroth > 8. Walnut Mountain; May 2008

A friend told us about this place that has mountains of scrap wood.
jtroth > 9. It's all pure walnut. Searching the pile is very much like going on tanseki at the river. We brought home several good slabs.
jtroth > 10. Mas thought that this slab would fit well with the little stone. To harmonize with the wood, he decided to turn the stone around and use the original back side, which has a more subdued color, as the front.

Here he is trying different settings to find the right balance. He was paying particular attention to the relationship between the surface features of the stone and the knothole and other features of the wood.
jtroth > 11. Once he has determined the setting, he makes a model. Here he has dug a hole of about the right size in the polystyrene, and has made a seat for the stone using plaster.

This will tell him approximately how to carve the hole in the wood base.
