After setting the stone, Mas did some minor sanding and carving around the edge of the slab to harmonize with the stone, and lightly stained and varnished the wood to bring out and preserve the original walnut color.
jtroth > 10. Mas thought that this slab would fit well with the little stone. To harmonize with the wood, he decided to turn the stone around and use the original back side, which has a more subdued color, as the front.

Here he is trying different settings to find the right balance. He was paying particular attention to the relationship between the surface features of the stone and the knothole and other features of the wood.
