Everyone collects stones. We remember as children keeping pebbles among our treasures. We pick up stones when we travel as mementos of a particular time and place. We mark our graves with stones.
This slideshow introduces you to the art of Suiseki, or Stone Appreciation. Stone appreciation was introduced to Japan from China about 1400 years ago. Over the centuries the Japanese gradually adapted to art to their culture and aesthetics. The modern form of the art started to develop in the late 19th Century (in the Meiji period).
Interest in suiseki has spread around the world, with new aesthetic forms developing to meet the aesthetic tastes of other cultures.
We hope you enjoy this presentation.
